Kansas Jayhawks opened a $448 million stadium renovation at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium last fall, making it the third-biggest college football venue upgrade ever.
Kansas Football’s Gateway District project turned a historic but outdated venue into a modern football cathedral. The Jayhawks played 2024 home games at Children’s Mercy Park and GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium while crews rebuilt the east side of the stadium. The finished project adds premium seating, wider concourses, and a west-side redesign. Exterior lighting shaped like wheat stalks nods to the team’s “Wave the Wheat” tradition.
The upgrade helps Kansas compete for recruits and fan support against Power Four programs. Before the rebuild, the stadium was widely seen as one of the most outdated in major college football. Now it stands among the country’s largest facility investments. Athletic director Travis Goff and head coach Lance Leipold have used the modern facilities as a recruiting tool to attract talent to Lawrence.
Only Florida’s $1.45 billion Ben Hill Griffin Stadium renovation and Northwestern’s project cost more than Kansas’s $448 million upgrade. The Jayhawks rank third in college football for stadium spending, according to The Next Round’s comparison. The investment reflects Kansas’s push to elevate every part of its football program under Goff and Leipold.
Future phases of the Gateway District will add entertainment, hospitality, and mixed-use spaces around the stadium. The full development is expected to wrap by 2027 or 2028. The Jayhawks open the 2026 season against Long Island University Sharks on September 5. The upgraded venue aims to turn game days into year-round destinations beyond football Saturdays.
